Lithium-Ion Batteries 101
Course Description: Lithium-Ion batteries have revolutionized our lives and, today are being used in almost all electronics due to their high-energy density, specifically in energy storage facilities. As they’re becoming more economical, data centers are being designed and converted to Lithium-ion batteries. But recent battery explosions have demonstrated how dangerous they can be. This course will explain the four stages of battery failure and how to prevent a thermal runaway with proper “Advanced Detection” at the appropriate stage of failure. It will also address why conventional gas detection will not prevent thermal runaway and address best design and layout practices as well as the sequence of operation.
This second part of the presentation will explain the stages of lithium-ion battery manufacturing, safety risks at each stage during manufacturing and solutions. It will cover various approaches AHJs have had to implement within their jurisdictions to prevent/minimize fire threats and protect people.
