Course Description: This 3-Day (21-hour) course is a digitally based, fundamental-level course that introduces the student to the fundamental methodology for application of the requirements for fire alarm systems.  The course will provide a review of California Fire Code Chapter 9 requirements for fire alarm systems, as well as NFPA 72 (’22 ed.) Chapters 7, 10, 12, 17, 18 and 26.  It will also include instructor led plan review exercises of digital fire alarm plans. Designed For: Those desiring to learn more about fire alarm systems, related codes and standards, and digital fire alarm plan review.

Instructor: Justin H. Beal is a Fire Prevention Engineer with the City of Fresno (CA) Fire Department and is the owner of Pacific Consulting & Risk, a private, fire-related consulting firm. Justin has worked in the fire service for over 18 years, and his areas of expertise include: Fire protection engineering, Fire-related plan review, and Fire department administration. Justin holds a bachelor's degree in Fire Science, a master’s degree in Public Administration, and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s – Executive Fire Officer Program. Justin is a credentialed Fire Officer (FO) and Fire Marshal (FM) through the Center for Public Safety Excellence’s – Commission on Professional Credentialing. Justin also holds the California Fire Service Training and Education System certifications of Public Education Officer I, Fire Prevention Officer, Fire Protection Specialist, Plans Examiner, Fire Marshal, Instructor 1, and Instructor 2. He is also an NFPA – Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) and he sits on the International Code Council’s (ICC) – Fire Code, Performance Code, and Wildland-Urban Interface Code – Interpretation Committee (FCIC).

  • Electronic Plan Review Software (i.e. Bluebeam, etc.), and sufficient experience in navigating the software.
  • .pdf viewing software (i.e. Adobe Acrobat) for viewing course materials.

All lecture PowerPoints will be provided to students in electronic format.
Electronic access to the course materials is granted to students via Google Drive. Many agencies restrict file sizes for these types of documents, and students must provide an email address that can accept course files. It is the student’s obligation to download the course materials and have them available prior to attending the course.

  • Course Limited to 40 attendees. Course may be cancelled if fewer than 15 registrations are received.
